Razer Basilisk Ultimate review, the most powerful gamer mouse in the world

Razer Basilisk Ultimate, this is the name of the evolution of what was undoubtedly one of the most interesting wire mice of recent years.

A mouse designed especially for the shooter genre (Overwatch, Battlefield, BioShock, Wolfenstein, Doom, Borderlands), but capable of handling an avalanche of other titles, thanks to the prominent features and a great erogonomic handle.

    A new sensation

Razer Basilisk Ultimate, model presented only a few days ago and which we talked about in an in-depth news, is the heir to the acclaimed Razer Basilisk flush model.

In themselves, the two models are similar (in the main lines) only in design, with some important differences and in the name, because in fact the new Razer Basilisk Ultimate is completely renewed.

The strong impression is that in Razer ideas the enhancement (and at this point the role) of the Basilisk goes far beyond the Ultimate, because at the same time they also presented the Razer Basilisk X Hyperspeed model, which we will deal with later but which we anticipate, it is also very different from both this and the previous one.

    Unleash your potential

The map accompanying the mouse recites the mantra “Unleash your potential” a bit presumptuous but which, in the end, goes well with a product that actually offers first-rate features from any point of view you look at it.

The mechanics and internal solutions follow those already seen in the Razer Viper Ultimate, as well as the accessories: but here, thanks also to the excellent design and more targeted profiling, it lends itself to a better result.

Just out of the box you realize that the product is heavier, a factor that the writer likes best, and that recalls the Basilisk only in its aesthetic forms, because now there are two additional lateral LED lines (in addition to the logo on the back and on the wheel).

The additional LEDs offer a much more interesting and gamer look than in the past, certainly giving more prominence to a product whose design was already very good and extremely comfortable.

Curiously, out of the box the Basilisk does not have the default clutch button, although present in the box, but presenting itself (unlike in the past) with the cap: we do not know if this decision is due to a failure of the choice (which we liked a lot) or to wanting to leave users more free.

    One more Dock

In any case, in the box, in addition to the Basilisk (whose name recalls the mythological creature popularized by the Harry Potter saga there is a clutch button (optional), the MicroUSB / USB-A cable (with soft fabric cable) and a Dock .

The Dock has multiple functions here: it is used to recharge the mouse when not in use, although obviously the mouse can also be charged (and used) directly via the front connector (with connector profiles that we honestly do not understand, much that it is not possible to use other cables except the default one).

But it also serves to host the USB antenna during operation and, if the Synapse drivers are active, also for other things: the lighting of the Dock can in fact be programmed and among the most interesting options there is also that of providing feedback. visual indication of the battery charge (complete green, partial yellow and almost empty red).

The visual feedback on the dock becomes very important because, although the mouse still lights up red typically under 5%, usually the eye is fixed on the display and does not look at the hand, while the Dock can be put more in view.

    Old and new

The shape of the Razer Basilisk Ultimate as we have said is “indicatively” identical to the Basilisk and the Basilisk Essential (the cheapest version), but with a careful eye the differences are considerable

The cut of the shapes is more decisive in the Ultimate model, with a greater diversification of materials (such as the shiny plastic belt that cuts the satin plastic parts, absent in the previous model).

The viscous rubber on the outside has changed, now more knurled, the position and type of buttons for the upper and clearly also the lower part have changed, because the wireless model has a drawer that houses the USB antenna when traveling.

The lower part is also characterized by the new bearings, made of pure white PTFE (the same material used for the coating of non-stick cookware), which according to Razer favor the sliding in the new generation mats: placed side by side, the two Basilisks show all the years that separate them unequivocally, if only for the major illuminated areas of the second.

For the rest there are 11 programmable buttons, the possibility of having the clutch button and the wheel with variable hardness (except for an analog variator placed under the mouse) with lateral click capability.

    Form and substance

The technologies inside the mouse are very important: like the Viper in the Razer Basilisk Ultimate the wireless (Wi-Fi 2.4 Ghz only) uses the Razer HyperSpeed system, capable of guaranteeing greater speed during wireless operation.

On this, while not being able to provide official evidence, we can say that during the press presentation in Hamburg, they showed the results of their internal tests and what emerges is an impressive constancy in the wireless signal which, in various stressful situations, does not lose. never force.

Recall that like the Viper and the Razer Lancehead Wireless, the new Basilisk Ultimate also uses an adaptive frequency technology system, which every millisecond scans all the available frequencies checking for any form of interference, immediately switching to the fastest frequency automatically.

In addition to this, the optical chip has also changed: the new chip, Focus +, reaches 20,000 dpi precision, with on-the-fly sensitivity configuration (default levels: 800/1800/4000/9000/20000) typically in the upper buttons, but the the user is able to customize each button.

The new chip uses a better Tracking of movements, and among other things by activating the function in the drivers, it is also able to self-calibrate on different surfaces: a novelty is also the possibility of intervening on the asymmetrical Cut-Off, in practice the user has the possibility of establishing, through a pattern of choices, the modalities in which the mouse acts when we move it passively (i.e. when it is lifted from the surface to reposition it).

The front keys use the optical switch technology for Razer mouse which intercepts the click optically (and not mechanically) reducing the ghost effect and among other things significantly improving the life of the mouse, now increased to 70 million clicks (previously they were 50), values concretely speaking far beyond the potential life of the mouse itself.

Last mention for the battery, which for a mouse of this type represents the greatest criticality. Considering the lighting, the Pooling rate (the number of times the mouse communicates with the computer, which for a cheap mouse rarely exceeds 50Hz, for a professional mouse it can go up to 100 or 200Hz while here it is steady on 1000 Hz), an optical chip at 20,000 dpi and Wi-Fi wireless (historically more expensive than a Bluetooth one), the value expressed by Razer of 100 Hours (maximum, with lights off) is an extraordinary result.

From our tests, the mouse easily reaches three days of work with lights on, on business hours (8-12 hours a day): we remind you that it is still very convenient to place the mouse charging in the Dock at night and that in any case it also works flush during charging.

    Synapse

We have talked about it several times but it is also necessary to emphasize here how this product uniquely depends on the presence of the Synapse 3.0 drivers, which among other things under Windows are now downloaded automatically at the first connection (then you need to create a free account and proceed to customization).

Also read:   Huawei Honor Band 5 review: Xiaomi's Mi Band 4 has its worthy rival

With the drivers the customization is very high: thanks to the onboard memory it is possible to create up to five profiles where to record the operation of each button, and recall them on the fly.

1 of 3 Razer Basilisk Ultimate, recensione del mouse più potente del mondo Razer Basilisk Ultimate, recensione del mouse più potente del mondo Razer Basilisk Ultimate, recensione del mouse più potente del mondo

With Synapse then we can also intervene on the lighting of both the mouse and the Dock through the set effects or other personal effects possible through an SDK. Too bad that the Chroma profiles cannot be linked to the profiles embedded in the memory: moving the computer mouse to the computer, the key mapping remains, not the lighting effects.

Really a (great) pity that Synapse 3.0 is not there for Mac: on the apple computer the mouse still works very well, with standard lighting and the limit of not being able to define the operation of the keys, if not through third-party software such as USB Overdrive .

    Considerations

Conceived, designed and built to be the most powerful mouse in the world at the time we write these lines (numbers in hand), the Razer Basilisk Ultimate accurately does the job in a way we dare to say authoritarian.

Ergonomic, (very) beautiful to look at both during the day but especially when it gets dark, comfortable to use and very interesting to customize, it has top quality technologies from all points of view and which in some ways make it for the moment unattainable by the competition, even if fierce.

The product has an important price, perhaps too much for the Italian public at least and a radical choice to support only the Windows environment which is questionable, but it is undeniable that it is an exceptional product to which the only attributable defects are venal, considering the target audience.

We could say that this is the definitive mouse, but we are sure that this statement will not last long, because Razer's desire to amaze is fascinating, with competition that does not stand by anyway.

    Pro:

    • Excellent design • State of the art technology • Dock is interesting • Very high resolution

    Cons:

    • High price, while understanding the intrinsic technology • Mac drivers are missing • Battery use suffers from different active capacities

    Price:

    • 189.99 Euro Euro

The Razer Basilisk Ultimate model can be purchased in the official Italian Razer store at a price of 189.99 euros, although it is also available at Amazon.it at the same price.

For those interested at the time of writing, the flush model is still available in the colors Black, White and Pink, as well as the Essential model, with a more affordable price.
